Drawing and Talking Therapy

Drawing and Talking is a gentle and effective therapeutic technique designed to help children and young people process difficult emotions, experiences, or trauma. It offers a safe, non-judgmental space where pupils can communicate complex feelings without having to use words directly.

During weekly one-on-one sessions, the child is encouraged to create a series of drawings. The trained practitioner acts as a supportive listener, simply reflecting and repeating what the child says about their drawing. This process empowers the child to stay in control of the conversation, helping them feel secure and relaxed. By using this indirect method, Drawing and Talking helps children gradually process challenging emotions and move toward emotional resolution and increased well-being.

We are fortunate to have two Drawing and Talking Practitioners supporting children at Stone Bay School: Nicki Dormer and Angela Bentley.

Nicki is highly motivated to make a difference and achieve the best outcomes for our pupils.  Nicki has trained as an Advanced Drawing and Talking Practitioner.  She finds working with children using this approach incredibly rewarding because she gets to witness profound, positive changes in children’s lives.

Angela is a trained Drawing and Talking Practitioner.  She is passionate about using indirect, engaging activities to facilitate emotional processing and deep conversation without pressure.  Working in this way aligns with her creative background and experience with therapeutic, non-direct communication.
